Re-thinking Social Justice

Re-thinking Social Justice in an Age of Moral Confusion

Nearly every synagogue in America has a Social Action Committee. That implies there are universal standards of social justice. But the recent inability of so many civic and religious leaders to unequivocally condemn the brutal attack on Israel civilians on October 7 suggests otherwise, that we are living in a state of moral confusion. In this class, we will explore:
  • How much of Jewish communal energy should be directed at fighting social injustice in the world when we Jews ourselves are victims of such profound injustice? What is the relationship between what we Jews do ‘for ourselves’ and what we do for ‘the world’?
  • Why have some Jews suggested that our very definition of social justice is politically motivated?
  • How can we know the difference between what is simply right or wrong and what is morally complex?
  • Why are the words ‘tikkun olam’ inadequate to describe the Jewish approach to social justice?
  • How might the recent attack on Israel lead to a fundamental re-thinking of how the Jewish community understands and ‘does’ social justice?
