How to Change Your Mind Without Losing Your Soul
With Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum
Jews are taught to question. It’s in our spiritual DNA to challenge the status quo. But ‘change’ is not the whole Jewish story. In asking Abraham to chart a new path, God also requires of his descendants a multigenerational commitment. In fact, the most meaningful changes in history incorporate a sense of purpose and continuity across the generations. What does the Jewish people have to offer a world that seems both overwhelmed by change and fearful of commitment?
In this class, we will explore:
-
How can we be strong in our identity, yet open to the new?
-
How is the Jewish concept of God rooted in creative tension between stability and change?
-
How do Jewish practices like Shabbat and Torah study create a way for us to change safely without fear that we will lose our core values?
-
How do Jewish symbols like sukkah and chuppah suggest a path for us to integrate the values of continuity and growth in our lives?
-
How is the creative tension between commitment and change relevant to the major problems in the world today?
